I am from Arkansas, intertwining with California and East O*****, crossing over to the west. Camden, Little Rock, Mt. Holley, Truman, Iris but Athens beats the rest.
I am from Grandma and Grandpa’s pancakes on Saturdays and oatmeal during the week, yes sir, no mam, and ladies first and think about what you say before you speak.
I am from the product of elementary school sweethearts, Lori + Larry equals marriage and more. T****, N****, K**** then me, but we prefer the name G4.
I am a Christian inside and out, God is the center of my life. Guiding me when I feel lost,
Reassuring me I can do All things through Christ.
I am a Scorpio, take it how you want it, November the fifth 1993, funny as all outdoors, and pretty boy, yeah that’s me!
I am from collard greens, cornbread, broccoli casserole, corn soufflé’ and yams. I am from O******, but a diehard San Francisco 49ers fan.
I am a teenager who’s never used drugs, or been picked up and taken to jail. I am an educated, respectful, determined, out-going African American male.
I am who I am today because of God and family, because of spankings and countless lectures and folks taking the time to pray for me.
I am most importantly a somebody; I know where I’m going and where I come from. To the top and beyond the stars, I am the one and only D***** C***** G****

You are a good role model and a lucky one to have people who care enough about you to teach you to have a healthy way of life. And good for you for listening! Perhaps you can write another poem entitled "Where I'm Going."
This is such a beautiful and inspiring poem. I love it! I don't even know you but I feel like I do a little bit. It reminds me not to judge people by the way they look or talk or walk. Thank you for being a good poet.

I read about the blog on Edutopia, and as a former English teacher (prior to a full career as a Naval Officer), I was very intrigued. My goal as a teacher was to make English exciting and meaningful to my students (this was back in the 70s), to help them understand how important it is to be able to communicate effectively. Congratulations to you Ms. Thaler for doing that today.
